Maersk made a public announcement on Dec. 24, saying: “With the implementation of the OPG initiative, Maersk is preparing to allow vessels to resume eastbound and westbound traffic in the Red Sea. Maersk is currently working on a plan for the first vessels to transit and to achieve this goal as soon as possible.
But Maersk also emphasizes that ensuring the safety of its employees is paramount and is Maersk’s top priority when dealing with the challenging situation in the Red Sea/Gulf of Aden region.”
If the effectiveness of the convoys does not guarantee safe passage of the vessels, “Maersk will not hesitate to reassess the situation and once again choose to initiate a diversion program in the interest of seafarers’ safety.”
