Perhaps more surprisingly, given the resilience of the sector to date, MSC has decided to cancel three consecutive sailings on its standalone Asia-Mediterranean Dragon loop due to weak demand.
After creating stronger booking conditions for weeks on end, and consequently generating spot rates higher than those on the Asia-North Europe route, the investment of additional capacity on this route appears to have had a negative impact.

Recently, MSC said it would once again suspend its independently operated Asia-North Europe Swan route as demand declines. This time it is a six-week suspension, from week 37 to week 42, until mid-October.
MSC shipping- Swan route
Last week MSC announced changes to the Swan schedule, including an additional call at Felixstowe in Northern Europe and the removal of some Asian ports from the rotation. Week 36 of the adjusted Swan service is still scheduled for the 4,931 TEU “MSC Mirella” on September 7 from Ningbo, China.
The Swan service was relaunched in June as a separate service from the 2M Alliance partnership with Maersk. However, MSC has been trying to justify the additional capacity and has reduced the deployed vessel capacity from around 15,000 TEUs to a maximum of 6,700 TEUs.
According to the latest edition of Ningbo Container Freight Index (NCFI) Commentary: Euroland freight rates continue to fall as liner companies choose to cut prices to solicit cargoes due to lack of demand for Euroland transportation.

45 voyages canceled
The latest data shows that out of a total of 665 scheduled sailings on major trade routes from the Trans-Pacific, Trans-Atlantic and Asia to Northern Europe and the Mediterranean, 45 sailings were canceled during the five-week period between week 36 (September 4 to September 10) and week 40 (October 2 to October 8), representing a cancellation rate of 7%.
Meanwhile, 58 % of the stoppages will be on eastbound trans-Pacific, 24 % occurring on Asia-North Europe and Mediterranean, and 18 % on westbound trans-Atlantic routes.
As China’s Golden Week approaches, shipping lines are likely to adjust capacity even more drastically and suspend more sailings. Now that the holiday is less than a month away, it is expected that the cancellation rate for the suspension of sailings on the East-West trade will be around 7% in the coming weeks.
Finally, once again to remind the sellers, the early October Golden Week is coming, a large number of China-USA shipping lines stop sailing suspension may have an impact on your shipping program, need to communicate with the shipping company and other good communication as early as possible, so as not to affect the normal shipments.
