MSDS is Material Safety Data Sheet, which is internationally known as Chemical Safety Information Card.
It is a file used by chemical manufacturers and importers to clarify the physical and chemical properties of chemicals (such as PH value, flash point, flammability, reactivity, etc.) as well as possible hazards to the user’s health (e.g., carcinogenicity, teratogenicity, etc.).
MSDS contains 16 items of basic information, none of which is indispensable.
MSDS is a proof of identity in the process of foreign trade circulation of goods. Carriers or freight forwarders can only judge whether to accept consignments according to their own operation qualification after understanding the information of MSDS. Not only chemical dangerous goods must be MSDS, some general cargo, due to the physical and chemical characteristics of the existence of dangerous, also need to provide MSDS report.
Generally, the goods that need to check MSDS are batteries, chemicals, etc. Besides identifying dangerous goods and non-dangerous goods, MSDS can also identify and confirm the special loading of some special goods.
The name of the production unit of MSDS is the same as the name of the production unit of the certificate of cargo transportation conditions. If not, the relationship between the two must be explained.
Which goods require MSDS?
- Any substance, material or product that is classified as hazardous by regulation;
- The product is classified as non-hazardous but contains hazardous substances.
- Examples include: adhesives, pastes, stationery correction fluids, knitting paints, corner protectors, reprocessed plastic pellets, lithium batteries, accumulators, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) shower curtains, microphones, microphones, wire, aluminum paper, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) packaging materials, aroma dispersers, sanitizers and disinfectants (for hands), Styrofoam, lip balm, moisturizers, mousse creams, and more.
- Batteries, raw materials, chemicals, nail polishes, shoe polishes, etc., are suitable for applications that require an ingredient list of the raw materials.
Non-hazardous batteries that do not need to provide MSDS
- Alkaline battery
- Zn-Mn battery
- Carbon-Zinc battery
- Dry battery
It can be regarded as non-dangerous goods, no need to declare dangerous goods, and no need to submit for examination.
So besides the above non-hazardous batteries, what are the more common batteries that need to provide MSDS and Cargo Transportation Condition Identification Certificate for checking to determine the appropriate loading?
Non-hazardous batteries need to provide MSDS
- lithium batteries: need to provide MSDS and comply with the IMDG Code Special Provisions SP188, before you can collect as general goods.
- Lead storage batteries: need to provide MSDS and comply with the IMDG Code Special Provisions SP238 before they can be accepted as general merchandise.
- Nickel-metal hydride batteries: MSDS and photos of the package should be provided to confirm whether it can be accepted as general merchandise. Please specify the shipping form when applying.
